Curriculum

Alignment with TEKS

Our directors follow standardized curriculums in alignment with the TEKS and local schools, throughout the students' music classes, and private lessons, ensuring that all of our students perform and compete at age appropriate levels.

TPSMEA

As a TPSMEA member, our students can participate in All-State, All-Region ensembles, compete in numerous Solo and Ensemble festivals, and the groups compete against other similar groups.

Bands

Beginning Band

This program is designed specifically for students that have never played an instrument or have received formal instruction for less than one year. Minimum age is 10 years old. 

Beginning Band students are welcome to attend football games but are not required. They are featured at one football game. 

Beginning Band students must be committed to:

Attend rehearsal every week

Attend concerts in December and May

Participate in Solo and Ensemble competitions held in the Spring (Dates to be announced)

They might also be invited to participate in a parade.

Intermediate Band

Intermediate Band members are students that are 2nd or 3rd year students. They have been in our band for one year or have received formal instruction for at least one year.  

Minimum Requirements: Intermediate Band members begin marching. To be able to march, a student must be skilled on their instrument and show ability to march and play at the same time. Marching students must be third year students of our band and in 7th grade or approved by the Dean of Music and board/administrative members. Accommodations will be made for those students who are not able to march due to ability or type of instrument.  

Intermediate Band members must be committed to:  Attend all summer camps Attend weekly rehearsals Attend all football games Attend concerts in December and May Parades (Usually only in December) Participate in Solo and Ensemble competitions (Dates to be announced)

Advanced Band

Advanced Band members perform during football half time shows and must be in at least their 4th year of playing or approved by Dean of Music and Board/Administration. Advanced Band members must prove they can proficiently march and play their instrument. Marching students must be third year students of our band and in 7th grade or approved by the Dean of Music and board/administrative members. Accommodations will be made for those students who are not able to march due to ability or type of instrument.

Advanced Band members must be committed to attend:

All summer camps

All weekly rehearsals

All football games

Concerts in December and May

Parades

Solo and Ensemble competitions (Dates to be announced)

Other to be determined events.

Honor Band

Our Honor Band performs at small events such as homeschool conferences, homeschool graduations, flag ceremonies and grand openings. Honor Band members are typically 10th-12th grade students. Joining requires an invitation from the Dean of Music to audition. Auditions are typically held in the Spring for the following school year. Honor Band students must present themselves with distinction and be proper role models for younger students. Honor Band students must possess a high level of maturity and proof of leadership toward all band students. The Board of Directors and Dean of Music reserve the right to remove a student from Honor Band at any time. The Board of Directors and Dean of Music can also invite a student to audition for Honor Band at any time of year if that student proves he or she possesses the proper attributes for Honor Band. 

Honor Band students must be committed to performing at all Advanced Band events and additional smaller events.

Color Guard

The color guard brings tremendous visual impact to a marching band. They perform during football halftime shows and march in parades with the band. 

Additional Requirements:

All weekly rehearsals

All football games

Participate in any marching competitions, pep rallies and parades

Attend the concerts in December and May.

Orchestra

Beginning Orchestra

Beginning Orchestra students are those that have never played an instrument or have received formal instruction for less than one year. Minimum age is 10 years old.

Orchestra

Orchestra members are students that have been in our orchestra for one year or have received formal instruction for at least one year. 

Minimum Requirements: Orchestra members must demonstrate ability to play their instrument and sight read music with little difficulty. The Orchestra Director has the authority to place a student in Beginning Orchestra or Orchestra based on their ability and individual needs.

Orchestra members must be committed to:

Assist with Beginner Orchestra Camp in August

Attend rehearsal every week

Attend concerts in December and May

Participate in Solo and Ensemble competitions held in the Spring (Dates to be announced)

They might also be invited to participate in a parade.

Honor Orchestra

An Honor Orchestra is being planned for the near future. See Honor Band for requirements.

Music + Movement

Directed by Mrs. Tameshia Magwood

Music and Movement is designed specifically for 5-7 year old children. In Music + Movement, your child gets to experience music in a fun, energetic class full of movement, singing games, and music literacy. Using Dalcroze and Kodaly methodologies, students will explore music through musical concepts, creativity, culture and collaboration. At the end of each semester, students will showcase their learning. Skills developed in Music + Movement will prepare students to join the upper elementary performing ensemble,  the Crescendos for ages 8-11.

Choir

The Crescendos

The Crescendos is a beginner choral ensemble for children ages 8-11. Students need no prior music or vocal training, and no audition is required. The Crescendos provide a fun environment for each child to develop the voice, and to sharpen the skills necessary when belonging to a musical ensemble. Skills developed will prepare student to join intermediate ensembles (choir, band, orchestra) to further grow their musicianship. Exceptions for 7 year old children are considered and accepted at the Choral Director’s discretion.

2 Formal and 1 Informal Performances

Additional performances may be added as opportunities are discovered.

Encore

Encore is a beginner/intermediate choral ensemble for youth 12-18. Students need no prior music or vocal training and no audition is required. Encore provides a fun and encouraging environment for each child to develop the voice and sharpen skills in sight reading, score tracking, Curwen hand signs, and other skills necessary in building strong music foundations. Skills developed will prepare students to participate in solo and group competitions (TPSMEA).
